Motown, Philadelphia Soul and Disco

In the 1960s, Motown’s sound and artists became a huge influence on the music scene.
Motown soul’s label-specific sub-genre had catchy rhythms and vocal harmonies and was a blend of R&B, gospel and pop.

Later in the '60s and into the '70s, another sub-genre of soul, Philadelphia soul, also known as Philly soul, the Philadelphia sound, Philly sound, or The Sound of Philadelphia (TSOP), developed, and it incorporated funk and jazz into the rhythms of the Motown sound and included more orchestral instrumentation.

Philadelphia soul laid the foundations for the disco genre’s emergence in the late 1960s, which had its heyday in the 1970s.

And there were many artists at that time who were not affiliated with either the Motown or Philadelphia International Records labels, but whose style was heavily influenced by their music.
