The tone and strength of a voice, a singer's energy, emotional expressiveness, their diction and the dynamics of their interpretation can make a song truly memorable. The quality of the vocal performance and the singer's unique style can make a big difference between two versions of the same song.
Many great sopranos have sung Casta Diva, but when I think of this aria, it is always Maria Callas who comes to mind.
Let's remember the voices that have impressed us over the years, as well as the singers who changed our perception of a song. For me, one of those singers is David Draiman. I always felt that the wonderful lyrics of The Sound of Silence called for a powerful voice, and his version is just perfect for me.
As always, performances in any language, genre and era are welcome, and feel free to dance too!
